“AMG Performance 2015” Gives Birth to a New 5.5-liter V8

Daimler’s AMG performance division took a very important step forward regarding its "AMG Performance 2015" drive system strategy by releasing a redeveloped 5.5-liter V8 Biturbo petrol unit and a fresh AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission.

This innovative eight-cylinder was developed entirely by AMG at its headquarters in Affalterbach, Germany and promises new standards in terms of fuel consumption and efficiency. The unit, known internally as the M 157, has a peak output of up to 420 kW (544 to 571 hp) and a maximum torque of 900 Nm (664 ft-lb), and is announced to enter the lineup in summer 2010.

This new unit will debut on the new Mercedes-Benz S 63 AMG, with an estimated provisional fuel consumption of just 10.5 l/100 km (22.4 mpg US). The engine measures 5461 cc and features advanced technologies like direct petrol injection with spray-guided combustion and twin turbochargers. AMG say they’ve found the perfect solution for efficiently harnessing the power of this new unit in the form of their new AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed transmission.

The drivetrain as a whole is also designed with a new start/stop function in the "Controlled Efficiency" driving mode. Other highlights of AMG new engine include a crankcase wholly of aluminium, four-valve technology with adjustable camshafts, an air/water intercooler and generator management.

Promising a 25 percent reduction in fuel consumption and 28.5 percent less CO2 emissions over AMG’s 6.3-liter V8, this new engine is part of AMG larger strategy to continuously reduce both the fuel consumption and emissions of new models with the new engine/transmission combination.

"The new AMG V8 biturbo engine is yet another milestone in our impressive V8 history. For the first time we have combined spray-guided direct petrol injection with turbocharging. With this high-tech package we are "best in class" with respect to fuel consumption, output and torque," says Friedrich Eichler, Head of Engine and Powertrain Development at Mercedes-AMG.
