2011 Dodge Challenger SRT8 Performs Well on Dyno

2011 promises to be a big year in the Dodge Challenger history, with the vehicle getting an upgrade that will allow it to deliver a more powerful punch. We’re particularly interested in the SRT8, which has been gifted with a 392 cu-in (6.4 liter) Hemi V8 powerplant.

The unit comes with a larger displacement than the unit it replaces (the outgoing engine treated us with 6.1 inches of muscle), also offering a more exciting potent game.

A quick look at the official figures will reveal that the unit should place 470 hp and 470 lb-ft at the mercy of the driver’s right foot. This is quite a stretch from the 2010 model’s output of 425 hp and 420 lb-ft. However, we are talking about official numbers. But what if the 392 tells a different story, once taken to the real world?

The Inside Line editors took the vehicle by the steering wheel and refused to let it to until it was taken to a dyno test session. So, let’s see what the 2011 bad boy holds under the bonnet.

The vehicle was more than eager to deliver 452 hp at 6,200 rpm and a peak torque of 443 lb-ft at 4,400 rpm. Of course, we are talking about wheel-horse-power here (WHP) here.

Considering that most vehicles come with a powertrain loss of between 13 to 17 percent, it could be safe to say that the 392’s crank horsepower (the one used by the automakers) exceeds the 500 hp mark by enough. However, we can't know what the exact loss is for this case, so we're not sure what the vehicle's real world crank hp rating is.
