2011 Buick Enclave, Five Stars Rating from the NHTSA

Tested earlier this month with the first batch of SUVs tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) under the new testing system, the Buick Enclave managed to pass the stricter tests and achieved a five star rating.

Equipped with six standard air bags, rollover sensing system, safety belt pretensioners with load limiters or Panic Brake Assist, the Enclave managed to score well when it came to systems' functionality. The vehicle itself and the way it was built also managed to add to the overall score, proving that it is providing good protection for occupants during the three crash tests the NHTSA has subjected it to.

“Enclave excels in providing leading-edge safety performance,” said Jim Chandra, Enclave marketing manager. “This is what Enclave customers demand as they tend to be early adopters of new safety features.”

The NHTSA announced the new rating system for the vehicles in the US in the beginning of October. The new rating system centers around crash tests in three areas – frontal crash, side crash, and rollover resistance.

The results are combined and compared to the average risk of injury and potential for vehicle rollover of other vehicles. This average has been called Overall Vehicle Score and applies to each vehicle tested.

For the year to come, the NHTSA plans to test under the new program 4 passenger cars, 20 sport utility vehicles, two vans and nine pickups. Some of them might achieve four stars under the new tests, even if they achieved a five star rating under the previous one.
