2010 Mercedes Benz GL BlueTEC, SUV of Texas

One by one, the winners of the Texas Auto Writers Association (TAWA) competiton held last weekend come into the public eye to claim their crowns. After we presented you the F-150 Raptor and the Patriot, together with what they managed to accomplish, it's time for a bit of German flavor.

The Mercedes Benz GL BlueTEC has been chosen by the aforementioned organization as the 2009 SUV of Texas. Aside from being about the single foreign presence in the winner line-up, the GL is also the first European luxury car to receive the distinction.

Throughout the two days of the event, the GL was put through hell to in order for the judges to see how the off-road systems handle river crossings, rock climbs, and steep down-hill grades.

With the use of Downhill Speed Regulation (DSR), Hill Start Assist, and AIRMATIC suspension, the GL managed to pass all obstacles with flying colors.

For those who got a bit upset about a foreign car being named SUV of Texas, here comes the fun part. This particular GL is only German in name, not breed. The SUV is being assembled in the Mercedes-Benz Tuscaloosa, Alabama plant, so one could say it's a native...

The GL comes equipped with a V6 diesel engine, developing 210 hp and 400 lb-ft. of torque. It has a towing capacity of up to 7,500-lb, when used in conjunction with optional class IV trailer hitch.

The 2010 version also features several visual enhancements, including sporty front grille and bumpers with chrome-ringed fog lights, redesigned stainless steel skid plates with trapezoidal exhaust pipes, and 20-inch five-twin-spoke alloy wheels with all-season run-flat tires. MSRP stands at $59,950.
