2009 Renault Megane RS Launched with Photos and Video

The sporty Megane Renault Sport was finally unveiled to the general public today at the Geneva Auto Show. The new model is now powered by a new-generation 2.0-liter 16-valve turbocharged petrol engine which raises the maximum output to 250 horsepower (184 kW) at 5,500 rpm with a maximum torque of 340 Nm at 3,000 rpm. Renault says that nearly 80 percent of its maximum torque is available around 1,900 rpm, an attribute that makes the car "exceptionally responsible and particularly flexible at low revs".

"Its broad useful rev band makes it a genuine joy to drive in everyday use, and the pleasure remains all the way up to the rev-limiter whenever it is pushed a little harder," Renault said in a statement today at the Geneva show. "Work has also gone into the acoustics of the Renault Sport 2.0 T engine to produce a telltale sporty pitch audible inside the cabin under acceleration."

The aforementioned engine is mated to a six-speed manual gearbox, with the suspension and the steering functions separated for better handling and traction performance, as the French manufacturer explained.

The new model is available in two different chassis versions: Sport, representing the base model of the new RS, and Cup, which integrates a limited slip differential for better traction.

Other highlights include LED daytime running lights, 18-inch aluminum alloy rims, central exhaust tailpipe and rear diffuser. Extra lateral support for the seats, analog rev-counter with visual and audible gearshift indicator, aluminum pedal cover and steering wheel with thumb rests greet the driver when stepping in.

Prices are not available for the time being, but the new Megane RS is expected to go on sale in the UK this year.
