Toyota Motor Corporation announced today that as of June 2012, their global cumulative vehicle production surpassed 200 million units. No, not this year, we’re talking about cars made since the company went into business. Still, a fifth of a billion is an amazing sum.
It took the Japanese automaker no less than 76 years and 11 month to get this far, but it’s definitely been an incremental climb to the top. After 36 years, in January 1972, they only had 10 million cars built, but demand boomed in the 80’s and 90’s.

The clock started turning in August 1935, when Toyota Automatic Loom Works built the very first Model G1 truck.

A large proportion of the cars put together by Toyota came from Japan - 145.21 million or about three quarters of the total. The rest, 55.12 million, came from overseas production facilities.

“I wish to express my heartfelt appreciation to our customers the world over who made it possible for us to reach this milestone.  I also have the most profound respect and gratitude for the efforts of all persons who were involved in developing, manufacturing, and marketing Toyota and Lexus vehicles over the years.  We are determined to make our cars even better, to continue to give our customers the best possible product.  This is the common goal of our 300,000 Toyota staff members worldwide, ”said TMC President Akio Toyoda.

Mihnea's favorite cars have already been built, the so-called modern classics from the '80s and '90s. He also loves local car culture from all over the world, so don't be surprised to see him getting excited about weird Japanese imports, low-rider VWs out of Germany, replicas from Russia or LS swaps down in Florida.
