What should have been a minor crash turned into a tragedy, killing 2 men and leaving 2 teenage girls in critical condition in the hospital. Two other people believed to have been involved are still missing.
The accident happened on a freeway overpass in San Diego, California, when a 2012 Nissan Altima spun out and smashed into a metal guard rail. The occupants got out and, thinking they were “sitting ducks” on the freeway at night, tried to get to safety, Fox5 San Diego reports.

Unfortunately, for them, that meant jumping over the wall. They didn’t know the overpass was over a canyon and that below was a 50 to 70-foot drop. Four of them leaped, while 2 continued walking on the hard shoulder and are still missing as of the time of writing.

Of the 4 that leaped, 2 were found dead and 2 are in critical condition. The deceased were males in their 18s to 20s, while the girls are 14 and 15 years old, respectively. Police are still trying to locate the other 2 occupants of the car, believed to have walked away unharmed.

Fox5 San Diego says that police will not be releasing more information at this moment, as most of those involved are underage. They also can’t speculate on what made all occupants want to flee so badly, other than the desire to get out of harm’s way from the freeway.

“When the occupants got out, they were probably unfamiliar with the area and unfortunately jumped over the wall,” is all CHP Sgt. Brent Lowry will say on the accident.

An open container of beer was found in the car but, for the time being, police are not saying alcohol was a factor in the crash or what happened afterwards.

At the same time, police are urging drivers to be extra cautious in cases like this: if the car is still drivable, take yourself to a safe spot in it as it is, they say. Don’t get out to walk to safety, especially if you’re not familiar with the area.
