Say what you want about the ZL1, but nobody can deny that Chevrolet managed to replace a legend (the L88) with an even bigger legend.
The work on the ZL1 started from a simple idea: the L88 was great, but a lower weight would have allowed for significantly increased performance. It's why the carmaker used an all-aluminum block, eventually building an engine the same size as the L46, a small-block unit that produced much less power.

Getting your hands on the ZL1 wasn't easy. Or affordable. The base price of the ZL1 was $4,717, but Chevrolet used a clever approach to increase its price by adding several options included in the ZL1 package but available for an extra price. For example, customers who wanted the ZL1 had to pay $384 more for J56 brakes, $37 for F41 suspension, and $81 for a K66 ignition system.

Eventually, the ZL1 package could be had for $5,267 – this was only the price of the package, so when you configured a Corvette coupe (carrying a $4,780 price tag), you ended up paying no more, no less than $10,050 for a Corvette ZL1.

You don't have to be a rocket scientist to figure out that the ZL1 was a rare presence on the road. Not everybody was willing to pay a small fortune for this special Corvette, so finding one today is rare.

eBay seller stokershotrodfactory says they purchased a genuine ZL1 four years ago, pulling the car from a barn after a long time in storage. The ZL1 was purchased from Washburn Chevrolet in Santa Barbara, leaving the factory with the Can Am white and Gunmetal interior.

The car has already received a series of fixes to return to the road in proper shape, so it now sports a new fuel tank, good brakes, and new seat covers and carpet. It sports the correct J56 brakes, the aluminum ZL1 block, and other original goodies that make it a highly desirable collectible.

The owner says they also have the original tank with the factory sticker, and it's included in the sale.

The ZL1 is ready for the road, flexing mostly original paint and a rust-free frame. It still requires occasional repairs (and a substantial overhaul if you're looking for a tip-top shape ZL1), but its condition is more than decent, especially for a vehicle that spent years in hiding.

A ZL1 never sells cheaply, so the digital fight on eBay already exceeds $50,000. It's not enough to unlock the reserve, though the seller did not disclose its value. The listing will expire in approximately nine days, so it'll be interesting to see if this special Vette finds a new home. Until then, you can find the car in Upland, California, if you're interested in a thorough in-person inspection.
