Six Hot Wheels Super Treasure Hunt Cars of 2007

The other day, one of my buddies who owns an RX-8 showed me some of the diecast cars he had from an international shop. Another RX-8 owner in my group makes custom cars and has all the different scales at home. And yet, they have never found a Super Treasure Hunt in the wild. Most people are in the same situation, which shows how lucky you are to find the coveted collectibles.

I've reviewed all the STH series going as far back as 2008 in my recent stories. And that means there's still one more set of 12 cars to explore: the 2007 iteration! That's a long time ago; believe it or not, it's the same year Apple launched the first iPhone! Microsoft unveiled Windows Vista, and Queen Elizabeth II was 81 years old. Some of the best movies coming out of Hollywood that year were No Country for Old Men, American Gangster, 300, and I Am Legend.

Beyonce topped the Billboard Top 100 Singles Chart with her hit song Irreplaceable. But I'd rather listen to Nickleback's Rockstar, which debuted that same year. As for Mattel, 2007 came with a change for the Mainline series. The old Treasure Hunt models became TREA$URE HUNT$, which we all know and refer to as Super Treasure Hunts. Collectors could get 12 special items that year, and in part one of this story, we'll go through the first six.

’69 Pontiac GTO

Right off the bat, the '69 Pontiac GTO is one of the most exciting HW Super Treasure Items of 2007. Phil Riehlman designed this casting for its 2005 First Editions: Realistix debut, alongside other vehicles such as the Ferrari 575 GTC, the Maserati MC12, and the Aston Martin V8 Vantage. Mattel released another three more variations of the casting in the first year alone and just two more in 2006.

The blue and yellow color combo on the TH and the STH was exciting and ideally suited to the Muscle Car. The 5-Spoke Mag Style Real Riders took it to the next level, but I would be OK with owning the lesser variation. I admit I was almost afraid to see how expensive this item is today, but I was relieved that even the most expensive ones cost less than $65.

If you're lucky and are OK with the missing blister card, you could get it for as cheap as $30. The diecast manufacturer unveiled at least six more amazing variations of this casting before ending its production in 2018. Don't be surprised if some are listed for as much as $500 on eBay. With over 30 iterations of the '69 Pontiac GTO to collect, it's safe to assume you'd need a budget of between $1,000 to $1,500 to get them all.

Nissan Skyline

The Nissan Skyline is the oldest casting in part one of our story, debuting in the 2002 First Editions series. The Metallic Dark Blue model introduced the R32 to a world of Hot Wheels enthusiasts, already featuring a race-ready attitude with that wide body kit. Alec Tam designed the casting, and we have seen 32 variations of it so far.

A retool occurred in 2016, but we have only had two iterations since, one of which is the Godzilla-themed R32. The 2022 Legends Tour Special Skyline was popular among collectors, but let's return to 2007. The car had been around for several years, and three exciting models had already emerged in 2003, featuring Real Riders wheels. I've seen one selling for $350 on eBay, but it is stunning! Mattel chose a mix of Copper and Silver for the Super Treasure Hunt release and 6-Spoke Bling wheels.

Although some drift fans might disagree, that isn't ideal for a car like the R32. Someone listed a pack of 12 special Skyline (some RLC, some STH) for $1,500 on eBay. But if you only care about the 2007 model, I've seen it going for as much as $650. The cheapest one I could find is still set at $170.

’69 Camaro Z28

The '69 Camaro Z28 would have made for a great Super Treasure Hunt model if it wasn't for one tiny detail at play. It is a 'Tooned vehicle, and it's not the kind Mattel has come up with today. It's the old, silly design. Phil Riehlman designed it before its 2004 release; a complete collection would require all 21 variations.

Nineteen of those featured typical 5-spoke wheels, so perhaps the only incentive to buy all of them is the color diversity. Granted, the model looks much better with the Spectraflame Green paint job and the black roof and hood. Mattel went with the Mag-Style 5-Spoke Real Riders wheels here, as that seems to be the go-to option for most of their tiny Muscle Cars.

Prices on the open market vary between $25 and $55, so it might not be worth it if you're only interested in getting the wheels for another car. The Tru Collection Starter Set Exclusive '69 Camaro from 2006 can require more effort, with prices going as high as $80. But those Faster Than Ever wheels are even worse than the regular 5-spoke ones.

Corvette C6R

The third item of the day is also on my Top 5 list for the 2007 STH series. I raced the Corvette C6.R in Assetto Corsa last year, as I was curious to see how fast it would go around the Nurburgring Nordschleife. Using a keyboard, I set a fast lap of seven minutes and 18 seconds. I should give it another go on my Logitech G29 wheel. Jun Imai designed the Hot Wheels casting, and the 2006 First Edition model featured a classic yellow livery.

Four more variations came out later that year, but Mattel shifted the casting into high gear in 2007. There are two slightly different variations of the Super Treasure Hunt model: one is black, and the other is gray. Both use the same Gold 6-spoke Bling wheel design, and prices for each can go up to $100 or more. Several more interesting C6.R variations exist in the same price range, including the two Speed Machines models.

Mega Thrust

The last two items on this list are both fantasy vehicles, unfortunately. Mega Thrust is a cool name; I'll give them that. It reminds me of the company's Deora casting, but it also looks like one of those car beds, if you know what I mean. Mattel used this name only for the first four iterations before switching to Night Burner. The 2007 Super Treasure Hunt is decent and gets better the more you look at it.

It could be a replica of a hero vehicle from a Sci-Fi movie. It features a Spectraflame Dark Orange paint job and a white and black livery, and it keeps making me think of the Armadillo from Armageddon, except it doesn't have as many wheels, and it's not built for the same purpose. You could buy this STH for less than $20, so it's certainly not very popular among collectors of any age.

Hammer Sled

Hot Wheels motorcycles generally receive less attention than cars, but it's even worse if it's not even a replica of a real bike. That's the case for the Hammer Sled, which is supposed to parody a chopper. Greg Padginton designed this casting, only available in stores between 2006 and 2013. It was still enough time for Mattel to release 16 variations, seven featuring Spectraflame paint jobs. Prices vary between $15 to $40, and you'll have to throw in a few bucks if you want to pick up the Regular Treasure Hunt model as well. If you don't plan on having the complete 2007 STH collection, you could skip buying the Hammer Sled. That's what I would do, anyway.
