When one thinks about the original VW Beetle Cabriolet, the drag strip isn’t exactly the first thing that comes to mind. Nevertheless, we are here to discuss one retro Beetle that can easily smoke supercars when playing the Christmas Tree game.
This Beetle recently hit the Santa Pod Raceway track in the UK for the 2015 Cal Look Drag Day event. With its top nicely secured, the Vee-Dub managed to perform quite a stung, pulling an 8.8s run at 140 MPH (225 KM/H).
Of course, a simple glance at this monstrous Beetle reveals it’s more of an alien bug, the kind we met in the Men in Black series. And get this - compared to the tech mods it has received, the appearance of this VW almost makes it a sleeper.
From the bespoke rollcage to the drag radials at the back, everything screams “let me at it!”.
A wheelie bar and a parachute system complete the list of features that make this once cute Volkswagen feel at home on the drag strip. As for the source of all the power, we’re not aware of the exact specs, but we do know the rear end conceals a massive single-turbo setup. The engine lid sits somewhat detached to the body, as part of the extreme modification scheme.
And if you thought this piece of action is impressive, you should know this Beetle can do even better. For one thing, the VW pulled an 8.2s run last year. The feat was achieved on the same stretch of prepped asphalt.
