The most affordable new pickup truck in the United States of America, the Escape-based Maverick has been hit with a recall due to improper coding. As it happens, the body control module software doesn't adjust the turn signal flash rate frequency to warn the driver that a turn signal isn't working correctly in the event of a rear taillamp turn signal lamp bulb failure.
Affected vehicles, therefore, do not meet the requirements specified by Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 108. The remedy comes in the form of a software update for the body control module, with said update providing a turn signal bulb outage notification failure. Documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reveal that dealers have already been informed about this recall, whereas Maverick owners will be notified via first-class mail in the first week of January 2024.

The Dearborn-based automaker says that the incorrect software was introduced on February 3, 2021. The correct body control module configuration file was rolled out on November 16, 2023. As a result, the affected population concerns Maverick pickup trucks produced between February 2021 and November 2023. How many of them? Ford says 189,814 units.

If you recently took delivery of a 2024 model, the easiest way of telling whether your Maverick is included in this recall is to run the vehicle identification number on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's website. Those with 2023 and 2022 models shouldn't even bother because their trucks are definitely included in this campaign.

FoMoCo reviewed this concern on November 21, five days after the incorrect body control module configuration file was taken out of production. According to a report published by the NHTSA, the Systems Engineering and Validation division identified this problem during "future model development testing."

Pretty interesting choice of words, isn't it? On the other hand, that choice of words shouldn't come as a surprise because Ford is working on "new extensions of the Bronco and Maverick nameplates." The quote comes courtesy of a press release from October 26. In the Maverick's case, what kind of extensions can we look forward to? An all-wheel-drive version of the hybrid would be pretty sweet. Given its relation to the Escape crossover, a plug-in hybrid is also possible.

Earlier this year, Ford trademarked the Maverick Lobo designation with the United States Patent and Trademark Office, and Dearborn's favorite son has also been caught testing this very version of the Maverick. Pictured with camouflage on its front and rear ends, the heavily anticipated Maverick Lobo sports 19-inch wheels. Could FoMoCo be reviving the sport truck genre for 2025? It sure seems like it!

Originally priced at $19,995 plus $1,495 for the destination charge, the Maverick used to come standard with the front-drive hybrid powertrain. The 2024 model year saw the 2.0-liter turbo become standard, which is a bit weird because you're charged top dollar for this engine in the Bronco Sport. More specifically, only the range-topping Bronco Sport Badlands comes with the turbo four-cylinder lump.

Currently priced at $23,815 plus an irritatingly steep $1,595 destination charge, the Maverick soldiers on as the most affordable new truck in the United States of America. Higher up the spectrum, the Ranger and F-150 start at $32,670 and $34,585, respectively.
