Designed to replace the RD 250 and RD 350, the TZR 250 was born in 1986 with a price of around $6,000. The 2MA variant was known in the UK, while in Japan the bike was familiar under the name 1KT. There were variations of these models, the changes concerning the lighting arrangements and the indicators. Till 1996 when production of TZR 250 stopped, there were the reverse cylinder version 3MA and the V-twin 3XV model.
