The Ducati 400SS, also known as the 400SS Junior, was a sports motorcycle manufactured by Ducati from 1989 to 1997. In addition, two other versions were available. The Ducati 350SS was made from 1991 to 1993, and the 600SS was produced from 1993 to 1999.

The smaller displacement models, the 350SS and 400SS, were developed to meet Japan's 400cc and Italy's 350cc regulations limits of the maximum displacements allowed for probationary motorcyclists. In addition, the 1994 Ducati 600SS was introduced as a cheap way to expand Ducati's range.

In 1992, the Italian motorcycle manufacturer launched the Ducati 400SS, a sports machine based on the larger 750SS model, which shared the same frame, engine, and most of its components.

Visually, the bike was fitted with factory-installed features, such as three-spoke lightweight aluminum wheels, a full fairing with a large, square headlight, a one-piece dual seat with a passenger grab handle, and a medium-sized windscreen.

As for the stopping power, the bike's 17-inch wheels were fitted with a 320 mm disc coupled to a four-piston caliper on the front and a 245 mm disc with a dual-piston caliper on the rear, offering optimum braking power.

The 1992 Ducati 400SS had its heartbeat set by a 398cc four-stroke air-cooled V-twin engine managed by a Mikuni carburetor, delivering an output performance of 42 hp with a maximum peak force at 7,000 rpm and 35 Nm (26 lb-ft) torque at 8,500 rpm.
