In 2011, Peugeot showed the first images with the 4008 crossover SUV vehicle and it was a close relative to the Mitsubishi ASX and the Citroen C4 Aircross.
The two big companies, PSA (Peugeot-Citroen) and Mitsubishi joined forces to develop few vehicles. Apart from the eco-friendly Peugeot iOn – Mitsubishi iMiev and Citroen C-Zero, the two car-makers had a history together in the SUV segment with the Mitsubishi Outlander – Peugeot 4007 and Citroen C-Crosser. The move toward the smaller SUV segment was not a big surprise.
The French car-maker had the freedom to design a specific front fascia, with a new set of headlights and grille. To minimize the size of the front bumper, the designers included more air-intakes in it, along with a wide center opening to cool the engine.
Inside, there were more similarities with the ASX. The instrument cluster with its binnacle-style look was the same as the Japanese brother. The infotainment unit featured a Peugeot inspired menu. The rearview camera display was incorporated into the rearview mirror, which was easy to use. Due to its small wheelbase, the interior space was not that big, but five passengers could have fit inside. But not for a long distance.
The car featured engines from both manufacturers: the 1.6-liter diesel was from Peugeot, while the 1.8-liter diesel was from Mitsubishi. For the gasoline units, the 4008 featured a 1.6- and 2.0-liter units. The standard transmission for all models was a 5-speed manual and a CVT was offered as an option.
