Maserati learned from its mistakes made on the Coupe that was shown in 2002 and improved the vehicle in many ways so it could become the grand tourer it was intended to be.

The Italian brand had a sporty DNA in its veins and a tradition that was spread for many decades. But even with all that experience in its past, it wasn't flawless. So, the Coupe that was launched in 2002 proved to sell in unsatisfactory numbers. Just two years after that model came out on the market, the Gransport came to fix all the issues.

In 2002, the Italian automaker introduced a new front fascia on the Gransport. It featured a larger lower grille with a metallic-mesh pattern that supported the company's logo and the Italian flag underneath. Its flush-to-bodywork headlights were swept back on the front fenders, on next to the low, curved hood. The greenhouse started with a very raked windshield and continued with a short roof and a sloped rear windscreen. On the profile, the two-door vehicle sported a B-pillar and a second window for the rear passenger and, also, to increase the driver's all-around visibility.

Inside, the luxurious environment was enhanced by the leather-wrapped seats and door cards. Moreover, the dashboard was designed with two arched lines that clearly divided the front occupants into the driving area and the relaxing area. Between them, the automaker installed a center console and stack. At the back, Maserati installed a bench for two, although the legroom was not exactly generous.

Under the hood, the 4.2-liter powerplant provided ten additional horsepower than the regular Coupe, and it was paired with a six-speed automatic gearbox.
