The second generation of the GMC Envoy was introduced in 2001 as a 2002 model. It was available in a few body versions, including an extended wheelbase version named XL.

Built on the same platform as the Chevrolet Trailblazer, the 2002 Envoy XL featured a different styling on the outside and, most importantly, a specific interior. But in the end, it was the same sturdy vehicle built for outdoors that could handle well on the tarmac, snow, mud, and trails.

On the exterior, the Envoy XL offered the same front view as its siblings, with big squared headlights and a broad black grille. In the front bumper, the designers installed a pair of fog-lights and a slim grille in the lower part. As a touch of styled detail, the carmaker mounted parking lights on its corners. The longer rear window revealed the difference between the regular Envoy and its XL brother.

Inside, the Envoy XL made room for up to seven passengers on three rows of seats. Depending on the trim level, it featured fabric or leather seats. As expected, it was man-made leather. There were a few options for the dashboard. While the base versions featured gray plastic all-over, the full-option versions featured wood-trims on the dash and silver vents. Regardless of the engine choice or trim level, the Envoy's instrument cluster showed six analog dials and an LED display at the bottom.

The Envoy was a great breakthrough for GM, which used a hydroformed chassis, which made the vehicle lighter than its competitors, especially the Ford Expedition. The XL version was available with two engines: a 4.2-liter V6 and a 5.3 liter V8. Both were paired with a 4-speed automatic transmission and a 4x4 on-demand system.
