The Japanese automakers have never been shy about admitting they replicate other people’s results. The MX-5 was developed after care full analysis of Triumphs and MGs, while the Subaru BRZ was reportedly benchmarked dynamically against Porsche’s Cayman.
Now though, Lexus is taking things even further with the IS-F, which has evolved from a sedan to rival the M3 sedan to a convertible to rival the M3 convertible.

The IS-F isn’t exactly a huge commercial hit right now, but reviews have been positive. It’s become known as the only Lexus built from passion, and this should be good once you get the top down.

Power will come from the IS-F sedan’s 5.0-liter V 8 engine, which will be equipped with an eight-speed automatic transmission. This combo will offer more torque than the M3, but what exactly is wrong with a C63 AMG if grunt is what you’re after.

The new IS-F Convertible has recently been spotted testing in the Nurburgring track in Germany. Cosmetically, there are no big surprises other than the arrival of a huge wing on the boot. The exhaust has also been changed around a bit and now the quad tips are circular not oval. Big deal! We would have liked to see a bigger change in the front end and a more sculpted bonnet. After all, these days even the Peugeot 208 has a sculpted nose.
