2014 Frankfurt, on home turf – that's when and where we think Volkswagen will come out with the new VW Golf Sportsvan, with production likely to start in October. We really shouldn't get that excited about a family MPV, but we are. The all-new nameplate will replace the Golf Plus, which through two generations has been quite successful, yet has fallen from favor
That's because a lot of competitors have brought their A-game recently, especially Citroen with its funky new C4 Picasso. But Volkswagen has the advantage of being able to use the same platform used by the 2013 Car of the Year, the Golf.

Besides this, the Sportsvan will also have an infotainment system that has won VW many new fans, active suspension, park assist features and more. The Germans will have had time to also work out defects with their air conditioning condensation or the DSG7 gearbox that have bugged them this year.

At its launch in 2014, the Golf Sportsvan will be offered with a range of six new engines, all being equipped with stop-start system that will help improve fuel numbers by 19%. Volkswagen will offer the following four petrol and two diesel units, all Euro 6 compatible:
  •
  • 1.2 TSI 85 PS
  • 1.2 TSI 110 PS
  • 1.4 TSI 125 PS
  • 1.4 RSI 150 PS
  • 1.6 TDI 110 PS
  • 2.0 TDI 150 PS

With the exception of the base 1.2, all will be available with DSG. The most frugal will be the 1.6 TDI fitted with BleuMotion tech that is estimated at 3.7 l/100k, equivalent to 95 g/km of Co2.

The Sportsvan will also be more practical and better to drive. Thanks to the modularity of the MQB platform, the wheelbase has grown to 2,65mm, which is 50mm more than the regular Golf and 107mm more than the Golf Plus. With a bumper to bumper length of 4,338 mm, the concept car is 134 mm longer than the Golf Plus, 83 mm longer than the Golf hatchback and 224 mm shorter than the Estate. At 1,807 mm the Sportsvan is just 8 mm wider than the Golf and Golf Estate; the previous model was 48 mm narrower. The Sportsvan and Plus are nearly identical in height without roof rails (1,578 and 1,580 mm, respectively); the Golf, however, is 126 mm lower, and the Golf Estate without roof rails is 117 mm lower. Also highlighting the dynamic presence of the Golf Sportsvan is its 20 mm shorter front overhang. Meanwhile, the rear overhang was lengthened by 46 mm; among other benefits, this increased the size of the luggage compartment, now over 1500 liters with the seats folded flat.

Mihnea's favorite cars have already been built, the so-called modern classics from the '80s and '90s. He also loves local car culture from all over the world, so don't be surprised to see him getting excited about weird Japanese imports, low-rider VWs out of Germany, replicas from Russia or LS swaps down in Florida.
