The Silverstone racetrack is preparing to serve as the playground for the upcoming Formula One race that is scheduled to take place this weekend. However, the circuit is in for a busy summer, as in just two weeks’ time it will serve as a host for retro Grand Prix cars belonging to six decades.
We are talking about the Silverstone Classic, an event that will be held on July 22-24 and will see 110 cars take part in multiple races throughout the weekend.
"The line-up of Grand Prix cars for the 2011 Silverstone Classic is nothing short of sensational – we will have more than four times the number of F1 cars than will be racing at the British Grand Prix," said event director Nick Wigley. “Nowhere else can visitors see so many Formula 1 cars racing on one weekend and see the development of Grand Prix cars from 1930 right through into the 1980s. We are very proud to have more than 100 Grand Prix cars ready to compete at the Silverstone Classic.”
You’ll be able to meet automotive legends in all shapes and sizes and experience all kinds of thrills, as the cars will be driven to extreme - the organizers highlighted the fact that this in no static show.
“One of the most glorious cars in action all weekend will be the Ferrari Dino of Tony Smith, the car that Phil Hill used to score the final Grand Prix victory for a front-engined car at Monza in 1960. The Ferrari will be challenged by the nimble front-engined Lotus 16s and the rare Scarab from North America,” stated the press release.
Our say: is that a Jaguar XFR safety car we see in the background?
