We've often criticized Mitsubishi for its uninspired designs and lack of foresight. However, new details about a the company's "New Stage 2016" business plan are starting to emerge, and we like what we hear.
Company CEO Osamu Masuko spoke to Motor Trend about the Mitsubishi's plans and revealed the current lineup of 23 models will be reduced to just 13 by 2016. One of the crucial new elements is the replacement for the Lancer compact sedan, which will now be derived from the Renault Megane, after a strategic partnership signed between the companies.

Keeping things humble is a good idea, but what about the Lancer Evolution, the hardcore rally car for the road? Well, that car could be replaced by a new nameplate and a new philosophy. Still all about the AWD split, the new Evo is going to going for a diesel hybrid setup and will not be based on the Megane in any way. This plug-in toy will have two electric motors and one internal combustion engine.

Exactly what sort of banger will be used has not been decided, but MT says their sources point toward a 1.1-liter three-cylinder with a 135 hp output, a diesel engine that debuted in the XR-PHEV concept.
