In order to perform any interventions on your Toyota VVTi engine’s timing system or cam shafts, you’ll firstly have to put the engine in top dead center position. This is the position when the first cylinder has all the valves closed (which means that it’s on the compression phase) and the piston is at its highest position.
To do this you’ll need to remove the valvetrain cover first and then grab a 17 mm ratchet with extended handle. You will use it to turn the pulley attached to the crankshaft, which is the big lowest mounted one you can find on the engine.
With the valve cover off, turn the crankshaft clockwise until the marks on the camshafts’ pulleys match. You will also have to match the little notch on the crankshaft pulley with the 0 marking on the engine block as shown in the video bellow.
This is a DIY guide and, as such, you must be aware the procedures described here involve some risks. autoevolution cannot be held responsible for any possible damage that might result while following this guide.
