GM to Downsize Engines for Chevrolet Volt and Cadillac ELR
The automaker hints that they might ditch the 1.4-liter range-extender found on the two hybrid models, and replace it with smaller 1.0 or 1.2-liter engines instead.
“We’re not ready to talk about any applications. We don’t have one right now for the U.S. and I wouldn’t be able to say that we have one planned for the US at this point either. We have not announced any of that.” said General Motors spokesman, Tom Read in an interview.
As the idea was not officially confirmed by the automaker, the three-cylinder engine option is rumored to be developed by General Motors and it’s China partners. Anyway, if approved for production, we won’t be seeing it fitted on the mentioned vehicles until 2015.
