Ford Tri-Fuel Mondeo to Be Unveiled at 2009 Leipzig Show

Ford is getting ready to launch a new model especially focused on fuel economy and CO2 emissions: the so-called tri-fuel variant of the Mondeo, which is actually capable of running on gasoline, bio-ethanol and LPG (liquified petroleum gas) will be displayed at the AMI Leipzig Motor Show in Germany (March 28 - April 5).

As mentioned, the new Mondeo will be able to run on three types of fuels and will be powered by a 2.0-liter Duratec petrol engine that features two gas tanks, Carscoop informed today. The first one has a total volume of 70 liters and is especially installed for petrol while the second one has a capacity of 48.8 liters (40 liters for the Estate variant) for LPG. The new Mondeo tri-fuel range will come in multiple flavors, four-door sedan, five-door liftback and station wagon.

The 2.0-liter Duratec engine produces a maximum power of 145 hp on petrol or E85 and 141 hp on LPG, the aforementioned source wrote quoting official Ford figures. More importantly, the LPG variant helps the Mondeo Sedan and Liftback travel for about 460 km (286 miles) while regular gasoline and E85 provide an autonomy of 850 km (529 miles).

At this time, the most powerful engine configuration in the current Mondeo lineup is a 2.5-liter that develops 220 horsepower and 236 lb-ft of torque at 1500 rpm. The 0 to 100 km/h acceleration is done in 7.5 seconds, while maximum speed is rated at 152.2 mph (245 km/h).

The American automaker says the tri-fuel Mondeo is expected to go on sale in Europe in April. Pricing in Germany starts at €27,500 ($35,150).
