After Porsche North America announced it's recalling a mere 7 units of the Macan, the Blue Oval trumped that figure with the 203k cars that make up the two most recent Ford recalls. The two campaigns involve glitches with the coolant pump of hybrid powertrains and wiring harness splices of the MAP sensor.
The first safety recall covers 133,227 Ford vehicles equipped with 2-liter gasoline mills. These are the 2013 - 2014 Ford Escape compact CUV and the 2013 - 2014 Ford Focus ST pocket rocket. Ford informs that all affected vehicles were built between October 5th, 2011 and October 14th, 2013. Now, what happened?

Apparently, insufficient compression in the engine wiring harness splices to the Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor may provide incorrect signals to the powertrain control module (PCM), explains the carmaker. This fault may cause the motor to run with hiccups or stall, increasing the risk of a crash especially at highway speeds. Ford informs the modules will be replaced by dealers, with the recall expected to begin September 29th.

As for the second call back operation, the Ford Motor Company is recalling certain model year 2005 - 2008 Ford Escape hybrid electric and the 2006 - 2008 Mercury Mariner in hybrid electric guise. These vehicles were manufactured from October 13th, 2003 to June 20th, 2008. The fault consists of a defective coolant pump for the hybrid system that may fail under various circumstances, resulting in the hybrid electronics overheating.

If the hybrid electronics system overheats, that will lead to the shut down of the powertrain, resulting in a stall-like condition, increasing the risk of a crash. Once again, if that happens at high speeds, that would be a pretty situation to find yourself in. The Blue Oval will notify owners and dealers will inspect and replace the Motor Electronics Coolant (MEC) pump with an improved brushless pump. The recall is expected to begin on October 27th.
