The newest General Motors-related safety recall covers certain model year 2013 Cadillac ATS and 2013 Buick Encore vehicles. According to documentation submitted by General Motors to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, these cars suffer from a defect with the safety belts.
More specifically, the automaker explains that the driver and passenger lap belt pretensioner cables may not lock in a retracted position under certain circumstances. This apparently minor fault allows the safety belts to extend when pulled upon.
If the seat belts don't remain locked in a retracted position when under load, the occupant may not be restrained properly if a crash is to occur, increasing the risk of injury. GM tells that the potential number of units affected sits at 48,114 examples of the 2013 Cadillac ATS (vehicles built between April 23rd, 2012 and May 1st, 2013) and the 2013 Buick Encore (cars built from August 23rd, 2012 to March 1st, 2013.)
General Motors informs that it'll notify owners soon and dealership service departments will replace both the front driver's and passenger's lap belt pretensioners. Unfortunately, replacement parts aren't currently available, so General Motors will first send an interim notification to affected owners in early October 2014, while a second notification will be sent when remedy parts become available.
Owners may contact the Buick brand's customer service at 1-800-521-7300 or the Cadillac customer service at 1-800-458-8006. Don't forget to tell the operator that GM's number for this recall is 14171.
