Fog, a Speeding Truck, and a Highway Pile-Up Combine for a Near-Death Experience

Highways are great since they allow speeds most of us wouldn't feel comfortable with on other types of roads - not to mention they wouldn't be legal. But there are two sides to this coin: drive fast for too long and you tend to get used to it.
Have you ever entered a city after a long drive on the highway and doing 30 mph (50 km/h) all of a sudden felt like standing still? Express roads like highways and freeways do mess with our perception of speed, but it's not just when we get off them that it can become dangerous. It's the same when the weather conditions are less than ideal.

We're on a road that's supposed to allow higher speeds, so we'll be damned if we'll go one mile per hour slower than the speed limit. So what if the rain is so dense the wipers are hardly keeping up, you can't see more than 30 feet ahead, and the surface is covered in water just waiting to cause some aquaplaning? There's no way I'm going under 80 mph (130 km/h).

Yeah, heavy rain is nasty, but fog isn't that bad, right? I mean, cars have fog lamps and the road is mostly dry, so what's the worst that could happen? Well, you could run head first into a stopped semi at about 70 mph. Or you could become the latest addition to a car pile-up at the same speed. The outcome in both cases is less than ideal. Not to mention the ambulance coming for you might suffer the same fate if the driver is too eager.

However, just because you managed to spot the blockage and brake in time, it doesn't mean you're out of the woods yet. The next thing you must do is get out of the car as quickly as possible, but always keep an eye on what's coming from behind. Once you're out of the car, don't do like this driver in the clip below, but head for the field beside the highway. If you were unlucky enough to get stuck on a bridge, just keep going forward through the stopped cars. Whatever you do, don't linger around.

And if you happen to spot a truck heading straight at you, for God's sake, don't run from it as it has every chance of catching you. Strafe to the side like a matador does with a bull. They may be assholes, but they know what they're doing. This driver from China got extremely lucky as he literally came inches close to a very violent death. Had he been a little fatter...
