People Drive Through Tree-High Flames to Get Out of the Way of Wildfires

Wildfires evacuation in Canada 1 photo

If we were to imagine the end of the world, this would pretty much be it. A dense, smoke-filled atmosphere, sparks flying all around, hundreds of vehicles lining up to escape nature's wrath and not much anyone can do to make it stop.
Sadly, for a lot of Canadian citizens, this scenario isn't just something they watched last night in a Tom Cruise film, but something they've been living for the last few days. The wildfires in the Canadian province of Alberta are spreading, actually doubling in size over Saturday, and some entire settlements were forced to evacuate.

Leaving your home is never easy, especially when you don't know whether you'll have anything more than a pile of ash to come back to. Still, seeing these people do it in such an orderly fashion does give us hope that in the wake of a cataclysmic event, humanity would stand a chance of surviving. Or at least Canada would, which isn't a bad thing come to think of it.

Even though they are surrounded by flames taller than a three-story building, the line of cars moves at a steady pace, and nobody seems desperate to get in front, even though the fire is just a few yards away. The hellish scenery is unbelievable to watch, so experiencing it first-hand must have been one of the most humbling experiences possible.

It's one of those clips that you can only watch in silence. There's nothing you can say that won't seem out of place. Even the driver that's filming his trip through this real-life hell is reduced to just a few exclamations. And then we get to the large intersection leading onto the highway, and we see there are men - firefighters and police officers, by the looks of it - who are standing in the middle of this terrible cocktail of ash, sparks, flames and extreme heat so that the evacuation ca be carried out smoothly. If you weren't already at a loss for words, this would undoubtedly get you there.
