The 2017 Rio, the Korean brand’s sub-compact car, has been spied while testing. We have the first pictures of one of the pre-production prototypes.
Kia is planning to launch the fourth generation of the Rio by the end of 2016. Until then, engineers are hard at work testing the mules for the future model. Our collaborating photographers provided us with the first spy shots of the 2017 Kia Rio.

Unlike its smaller sibling, the Picanto, the Kia Rio wears a full camouflage livery on its body. Just like its relative, the Rio now has daytime running lights with LEDs that have a new design. Their shape reminds us of Audi models, a curious coincidence since Kia’s design department is led by a gentleman who used to design Audis, Peter Schreyer.

Unlike the Henrik Fisker and Aston Martin scandal, we don’t think someone could ever mistake a Kia Rio for an Audi just from the LED daytime running lights, so don’t expect any discussion between the two brands on this topic.

The fourth generation Rio is set to receive an entirely new body and improved engines. Some say the 1.6-liter GDI unit is expected to be offered in this range. Like its siblings, the Rio will be updated in an attempt to reduce weight while increasing crash protection and body rigidity.

The design of the next Kia Rio is concealed pretty well by the camouflage pattern fitted to the body, but we know that it will get several parts from its Hyundai equivalent. This helps the mother company save money on development of new engines, platforms, and technologies and brings the consumers the most advanced cars the Korean carmaker can provide in this price range.

The interior of the MY 2017 Kia Rio is anticipated to receive a technology upgrade and better comfort features, similarly to what sister brand Hyundai did with the i20, its subcompact model.
