McLaren Automotive Boasts About a Record 2015

Every carmaker draws the line at the end of each year and analyzes its progress, so McLaren did the same and it turns out that the British supercar producer delivered 1,654 cars to customers across 30 markets and even created 250 new jobs within its factory to keep up with future orders.

McLaren’s thriving year is due to the launch of five new models and the introduction of the three-tier product family, Sports Series, Super Series and Ultimate Series. At the 2015 Geneva Motor Show, the automaker launched the hardcore P1 GTR and the 675LT Coupe.

The P1 GTR is, in fact, the badass version of McLaren’s P1 hypercar, designed as the ultimate track car for the company’s exclusive owners. Hand-assembled, the cars are used as part of the McLaren P1 GTR Driver Program, on some of the world’s most famous race tracks. In this program, wealthy customers become some kind of race drivers with the help of McLaren engineers and drivers, including Driver Mentor Bruno Senna, the nephew of the late three-time Formula 1 World Champion Ayrton Senna.

The McLaren 675LT Coupe is the first modern-day vehicle from the British company to wear the LongTail name and was limited to 500 cars. The track-focused 675LT Coupe was joined in December 2015 by a Spider version, also limited to 500 cars, and were both sold almost immediately.

In April, the automaker revealed the Sports Series, the most accessible form of McLaren ownership, at the New York Auto Show, together with the new 570S Coupe. Not long after that, at the Shanghai Auto Show, McLaren launched the 540C Coupe, and by the time the Sports Series is complete in 2017, the range will include two more body styles. Although it started production in November 2015, the company’s retailer network is holding back over six months’ worth of orders for the Sports Series.

Also in 2015, McLaren opened 12 new retailers covering areas such as Seoul, Mexico City and Houston. Its current 80 retailers cover no less than 30 markets. In 2016, the company plans to focus more on sustainable growth within the existing markets, rather than trying to expand to others.

According to Mike Flewitt, CEO of McLaren Automotive, “2015 was a year of rapid expansion for McLaren Automotive. When the company was set up in 2010, we set ourselves an ambition one new car every year. In 2015, we launched five. This accelerated development has led to yet another record year, with unprecedented levels of demand for all of our cars.

Because of this rapid growth, the British automaker has to hire a total of 250 new employees in the Production, Quality and Logistics departments and will take the production rates from the previous 14 cars per day up to 20 by mid-2016.

Last year also marked the end of production for the McLaren P1, as the last of the 375 limited supercars was delivered to its owner in December.
