We’ve seen plenty of drag races coming in from Sweden but most of the time, they feature cars that are close in performance or at least they should be. Sure, the results aren’t always as expected but we rarely get to see a duel between cars that have nearly two decades in between them as far as production goes.
What we have here therefore is a rather peculiar drag race between a BMW E30 M3 going up against a much younger Lamborghini Gallardo. In stock guises, this wouldn’t have even been a contest. But luckily for us, these two are not stock and they don’t even claim to be.
The Gallardo was tuned and the stock 5.2-liter V10 now has not one but two turbochargers on it, pushing around 800 horses at the wheels. That is an impressive number but not as striking as the figures claimed by other tuners that have gotten up to 2,000 HP out of that engine bay. It’s plenty of grunt nonetheless.
On the other hand, the car that seems to be the underdog here at first, the E30 M3, has only one turbo under the bonnet. It should be mentioned though, that the original S14 plant was replaced by a bigger, M50 plant which has a straight-six configuration and 2.5 liters of displacement.
These engines are known for their tuning potential and they were the basis for the S50 plants that powered E36 M3s. This particular car has around 650 to over 700 hp depending on the boost running in the turbo. That being said, things become a lot more clearer now.
That’s because the Gallardo might have a newer powertrain but its weight is pulling it down. Furthermore, it would’ve walked it if the race would’ve been done from a standstill but since these guys are racing from 100 km/h (62 mph), the poor Italian was bound to get a spanking.
It’s not shameful though, this particular M3 is also known to have taken down tuned GT-Rs, Ferraris and even superbikes like the Yamaha R1.
