Remember the audacious BMW E63 M6 that took on a Gallardo not too long ago? Well, it might’ve been shamed by Lamborghini’s best selling car but today it’s back and proving a point that many people fail to understand yet: torque isn’t everything.
This time, the Bimmer is going up against a car that’s even more powerful than the Lambo. Rubbish? Oh no, it’s the real deal. The culprit is a Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG with the Performance Package. That means that instead of the 525 HP the 5.5-liter V8 Biturbo plant under the bonnet was supposed to be making, the car can rely on 550 HP. Furthermore, the torque number went up from 516 lb-ft (700 Nm) to 590 lb-ft (800 Nm).
That is a hell of a lot more than what the M6 can put down, even if it’s tuned. That’ because unlike on the Merc, the Bimmer has to rely on a naturally aspirated engine that can’t be squeezed for sensibly more power via a simple ECU tune and boost increase.
In stock guise, the S85 5-liter V10 engine used to make 507 HP and 520 Nm (384 lb-ft) of torque. The video description claims that the car was tuned but doesn’t include a supercharger in the added parts. Instead, they only claim that a new ECU map was installed along with an exhaust. In theory, that should mean a peak of around 550 HP, exactly the same as the Merc but a lot less torque, probably, at most, also around the 550 Nm (406 lb-ft) mark.
In theory, the E63 AMG should’ve walked it but in real life, the results can differ quite a lot. Apart from the difference in torque that is striking and should’ve helped the three-pointed star car reach the finish line faster, the weight factor works in favor of the BMW here, since the previous gen M6 was lighter on its feet than what we have today. The transmission might’ve played a part too but we won’t keep you any longer with out debate, just enjoy the sound of a good old-fashioned V10 in the video below.
