Citroen has unveiled the third generation of its best-seller, the C3, yesterday. Now, everybody is wondering what the company will do to the aging C4 and C5 models.
Both the C4 and C5 have become the oldest cars in Citroen’s lineup, and they have begun to look dated when put next to the latest creations of the eccentric French brand.

We already know Citroen does not want to make the C5 in a conventional sedan form, but the C4 was expected to remain a compact hatchback.

However, Citroen product chief Xavier Peugeot, whose last name is not a coincidence, says the French brand plans a “radical approach” with the next C4 and C5 models.

In an interview with the Brits at Auto Express, Mr. Peugeot has revealed that both the C4 and C5 could become crossovers, with a powerful SUV influence. Citroen could drop the conventional body styles of the ongoing models and follow the SUV route entirely for these cars.

In a way, the French company’s decision is justified. Sedans are not as popular as they used to be, while hatchbacks are slowly turning into crossovers. At the same time, SUVs are insanely popular in every major market of the World, and the quirky French brand would be the last to stay faithful to traditional body styles just for the sake of the argument.

In other words, we believe it's possible Citroen will turn the next C4 and C5 models into SUVs. At this point, we must note that the automaker might change the names of these two cars, as their former nameplates might confuse potential customers.

Pierre Monferrini, Citroen’s head of future products, supported Xavier Peugeot’s view on the future of the C4 and C5 models. While being present in the D segment, where the C5 currently lies, Citroen does not plan a “conventional” design for the market.

The French company is best known for its unusual and fascinating cars, while its attempts of mainstream models did not convince buyers to sway from other manufacturers. The new approach could be the solution for Citroen, while Peugeot is expected to make more down-to-Earth cars.
