According to a recent report that started spreading around the internet, BMW and Volkswagen are amongst the companies that pay their US-based employees the least. That's amongst the auto industry, of course. That didn't stop the Bavarian company from being named one of the best employers in the United States by the Forbes Magazine.
The publication teamed up with statista.com and asked more than 20,000 American workers in companies with more than 2,500 employees if they would recommend their workplace to a friend. This endeavor led to a list of 500 companies across 25 industries that, simply put, lists them judged by what their employees think.

Surprisingly, despite the aforementioned pay level, BMW came in seventh overall and number one in the auto industry. Turns out, benefits can be worth more than a bigger salary.

The top spots were taken by Google (unsurprisingly), Costco and Marathon Petroleum. In between the podium and BMW's position, there's The Container Store, L.L. Bean and Baxter International.

As far as the auto industry goes, the next company in the list is sitting in the number 10 position, occupied by Harley-Davidson. Well, they might not be making cars per-say but they are working in a somewhat adjacent field.

The 20,000 employees asked about their preferences were not chosen at random though. The methodology used made sure to cover all genders, age groups, regions, educational levels and ethnicities. According to Forbes, the mix is representative of the overall US workforce.
