Having started production in November 2016, the 2017 Mazda CX-5 now has a price list in its domestic market. In Japan, the second-generation model starts from 2,462,400 yen, a sum that converts to $20,800 or €19,970 at the current exchange rates.
Pricing for the U.S. and European markets has yet to be announced, but the domestic launch also sheds light on the compact crossover’s specifications. Three engines and one transmission were detailed. A 2.0-liter SkyActiv-G and a 6-speed automatic represent the entry-level combination, packing 155 PS (114 kW) and 196 Nm (145 lb-ft) of get-up-and-go at 4,000 rpm. Gas mileage? 16 km/l, which is just about 6.25 l/100 km or 37.63 U.S. mpg.

Then there’s the SkyActiv-G 2.5. Also a four-cylinder and just as free breathing as the 2.0-liter engine, the 2.5 churns out 190 PS (140 kW) and 251 Nm (185 lb-ft) at 3,250 rpm. There’s a less potent version of the 2.5-liter mill available in Japan, rated at 184 PS (135 kW) and 245 Nm (181 lb-ft). The full-blooded 2.5 is exclusive to FWD models, while the the less brawny 2.5 is spoken for by CX-5 models equipped with the all-wheel-drive system.

The SkyActiv-D 2.2 diesel, meanwhile, comes in a single form, be it the front- or all-wheel-drive 2017 Mazda CX-5. With 175 PS (129 kW) and 420 Nm (310 lb-ft) at 2,000 rpm, the torquiest engine in the range is rated 18 km/l (5.55 l/100 km or 42.4 U.S. mpg). The 2.2-liter oil-chugging powerplant possesses the same output for both the front- and all-wheel-drive models.

As far as equipment is concerned, the second-lowest trim level (20S Proactive 2WD) boasts G-Vectoring Control, LED headlights (high/low beam), LED daytime running lights, 17-inch alloy wheels wrapped in 225/65 rubber, 7-inch infotainment, Sport driving mode, and two-zone climate control. The second-lowest diesel-powered model in the range (XD Proactive 2WD), however, doesn’t get a button that reads “Sport.” Nor does it matter.

On the safety front, there’s a lot to like about the 2017 Mazda CX-5. All models, including the 20S 2WD and XD 2D, come from the get-go with Advanced Smart City Brake Support. Arguably the most important part of the i-ActivSense safety suite, Advanced SCBS is a system designed to detect traffic signs (speed limits, no entries, and so forth), cars, and pedestrians.

If the laser sensor mounted on the windshield detects an imminent collision, it prepares the braking system for maximum stopping power. If, however, the driver doesn’t react, Advanced SCBS applies the brakes and reduces engine output, aiming to avoid the collision or reduce the severity of impact.
