It has finally happened, ladies and gentlemen! Bentley has shoehorned a diesel in the engine bay of one of its models. Of course, that model is the Chelsea Tractor of the automaker’s range.
Baptized 2017 Bentley Bentayga Diesel, the powertrain of the extremely luxurious sport utility vehicle in the adjacent gallery is borrowed from a more plebeian brand of the Volkswagen Group. Unsurprisingly, Bentley has chosen the 4.0-liter turbocharged V8 engine from the Audi SQ7 TDI, which uses a duo of twin-scroll turbochargers and an electric supercharger.

The triple-charged oil-burning powerplant is aided by a 48-volt electric system. Thanks to it, the electric supercharger gets into its own in just 30 microseconds, thus cutting down on turbo lag. Connected to a familiar ZF eight-speed automatic transmission, the turbo diesel engine can propel the 5,269-lb (2,390-kilogram) behemoth to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 4.8 seconds.

That’s exactly the same as the Audi SQ7 TDI, although the original is an idea lighter than the Bentley Bentayga Diesel. Top speed? 168 mph (270 km/h) as compared to the German model’s electronically limited 155 mph (250 mph). With peak torque available from 1,000 till 3,250 rpm, it’s pretty simple to understand that in-gear acceleration is this SUV’s strongest point.

Speaking of strong points, 429 horsepower (435 PS) isn’t nearly as much as the gasoline-fed twin-turbocharged W12 in the regular Bentayga. However, 664 lb-ft (900 Nm) of torque more than makes up for that. Mileage isn’t too bad either, Bentley reporting 35.8 Imperial miles per gallon (7.9 liters per 100 kilometers) combined according to the New European Driving Cycle.

“The Bentayga Diesel represents a moment of immense significance in Bentley’s history, by giving the world its fastest luxury diesel SUV,” declared Wolfgang Durheimer, chairman and chief executive of Bentley Motors. “Immense power, grand touring capabilities, and superb refinement – this is a true Bentley. Only Bentley could produce a car so powerful, yet so refined.”

While I still can’t get my head around the fuel on which this SUV feeds upon, I can’t question the GT capabilities of the Bentayga Diesel. After all, I recently experienced how great of a grand tourer the BMW 6 Series Convertible can be when powered by Satan’s fuel and kept in check by all-wheel-drive.
