Last year, after a surprise announcement from Volkswagen’s CEO, Mr. Winterkorn, SEAT started testing a new car, one that was almost immediately caught on tape by our keen spy photographers. However, back then, we only had the taillights and mirrors to make out that this was a mule for a car from the Spanish manufacturer. Now, it’s all coming out with camo.
The veils are off but don’t expect big details being revealed. The thing is, even though there’s no more camo, this is still a mule which means that even though it looks like a random Leon, it’s actually a prototype for a new model.
That new model will be an A/A0 crossover SUV, most likely one that will be close to the Ibiza model in a lot of ways. Being a mule and all, we can’t say anything about it with certainty but the extremely high riding architecture sure seems to confirm our suspicion.
This car is expected to borrow a lot from the IBX concept as well and come out with brand new engines from Volkswagen using both 3-cylinder and 4-cylinder architectures. Don’t expect it to be a rocket though, but better yet a more practical choice.
As for the transmission, the DSG gearbox will be the weapon of choice but a manual unit could also be in the works, depending on the cost/profit margin. This new model will be going up against cars like the Ford Kuga so it will have to be up to par on all levels. Expect it to be revealed in full somewhere in 2016.
