Based on the Acura SUV-X Concept presented at the 2013 Shanghai Auto Show, the 2016 Acura CDX certainly looks the part. You shouldn’t have seen the car until the 2016 Beijing Motor Show opens its doors to the press on April 25, but here it is in all its glory.
The peeps at Auto163 published the first photographs of the crossover and, from the looks of it, this seems like a promising proposition in the compact luxury segment. The biggest competitors of the CDX on the Chinese market are the Range Rover Evoque, Audi Q3, BMW X1, and the Mercedes-Benz GLA. Just like the facelifted MDX, the CDX doesn’t feature the signature beak of Acura. The diamond pentagon grille looks just right, though.

Jewel Eye full-LED headlights, LED daytime running lights, and a rather forgettable rear end round off the exterior design of the 2016 Acura CDX. The aforementioned Chinese publication published a single photograph of the interior, one that reveals the gear lever of an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission (as in the first dual-clutch transmission with a torque converter), piano black trim on the center console, and a red start button.

On the oily front, the Acura CDX is propelled by a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine rated at 182 horsepower and 178 lb-ft (240 Nm). Drive is sent to either the front or all four wheels. It is not known whether the CDX is based on the Honda HR-V. Back in 2014, the chief engineer for the HR-V told the automotive media that Acura could take an HR-V and dress it in fancy clothes. "There is a market for it worldwide, not just in China," he told Automotive News. "Personally, I think Acura needs it," the Japanese engineer added.

In terms of size, there’s a huge difference between the subcompact HR-V and the compact CDX. The CDX measures 4,495 mm (176.9 inches) in length, 1,840 mm (72.4 inches) in width, 1,600 mm (63 inches) in height, and sports a 2,660 mm (104.7 inches) wheelbase. The HR-V, on the other hand, is 4,295 mm (169.1 inches) long, 1,773 mm (69.8 inches) wide, 1,605 mm (63.2 inches) high, and rides on a 2,611 mm (102.8 inch) wheelbase. Nope, I don’t think they’re related either.

We’ll return with more information about the 2016 Acura CDX after the crossover debuts in Beijing.
