Way back in 2007, the smallest model of the OPC family started the supermini hot hatch trend of using 1.6-liter turbocharged gasoline motors. And that recipe for FWD fun is expected to live on with the all-new Opel Corsa OPC, which is slated to debut next year in March at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show.
Gone are the days of naturally aspirated mills and in are turbocharged powerplants. Even the B-segment hot hatchbacks couldn't avoid the demanding Euro 5 and Euro 6 regulations, so this transition would have happened sooner or later. Just like its predecessor, the new Corsa OPC is going to utilize a 1.6-liter turbo engine, but this mill will add some modern touches.
Those modern touches come in the form of direct injection, a twin-scroll turbo and, if our intuition is on the money, an all-aluminum block. The new engine is expected to come with 200 ponies and about 300 Nm (221 lb-ft) of torque, which is enormous for a car this size.
Coupled to a reengineered six-speed stick shift tranny, the 2015 Opel Corsa OPC is expected to hit 100 km/g (62 mph) in approximately 6.8 seconds, all the way to a top speed of about 136 mph (220 km/h).
The prototype spied by our carparazzi team may be heavily camouflaged at the front and rear, but Opel isn't fooling anyone: just above the front grille and just below the bonnet's shut line there's a wide air scoop that'll feed the twin-scroll turbocharger with cool air.
It may look remarkably similar to the recently launched Opel Corsa E, but the OPC boasts with add-ons such as pumped up wheel arches, more aggressive front and rear bumpers and other typical trademark design cues of modern hot hatches. Don't worry, interior upgrades such as bucket seats are also in store.
