Ford has released preliminary details of the 2.3-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder engine that will be powering the newly-introduced 2015 Mustang. Scheduled to arrive in late 2014, the sixth-gen Mustang will be the first iteration of the pony car to be sold officially in Europe.
Specifically developed for the Old Continent, where high displacement taxes are standing between many enthusiasts and their American musclecars, the turbocharged four-potter promises to deliver “more than 309 PS and 407 Nm of torque”.
To ensure the new mill is durable and withstands the stresses of its high power output, Ford enhanced it with a forged-steel crankshaft and connecting rods, piston-cooling jets, steel piston ring carriers, premium bearing materials, upgraded valve seat materials, a high-pressure die-cast aluminum cylinder block and a deep-sump,die-cast aluminum oil pan.
The manufacturer says the 2.3-liter EcoBoost is its first engine to utilize a low-inertia twin-scroll turbocharger for quicker boost response, lower CO2 emissions and improved fuel efficiency. The separated exhaust ports also help improve fuel consumption by about 1 percent by enabling the exhaust valves to remain open longer for reduced pumping losses.
The new unit will become available with a choice of two transmissions - a six-speed automatic with steering wheel-mounted shift paddles and a Getrag six-speed manual. For more details you can have a look at the official press release below.
