The Blue Oval announced a few weeks ago that its most capable full-size pickup can tow 31,200 pounds. But the 2015 Ford F-450 has recently been tested using the Society of Automotive Engineers J2807 standard and that towing capacity stands true.
First and foremost, we recommend the industry, including the Blue Oval, to stop comparing the F-450 with the Ram 3500 and the GMC Sierra 3500 HD because those are Class 3 category trucks, while the F-450 Super Duty is a Class 4 pickup. The 2015 Ford F-450 boasts with a towing capability 2,200 pounds greater than its closest rival in crew cab 4x4 flavor.
“We leave no doubt with customers that the F-450 pickup truck has best-in-class towing of 31,200 pounds – whether tested using our own internal towing standards or SAE J2807,” declared Raj Nair, Ford group vice president of global product development. Riding on a more capable F-350 frame, the 2015 Ford F-450 received a tougher suspension setup and 19.5-inch wheels.
Sold exclusively as a crew cab 4x4, the Blue Oval's truck benefits from the second-gen 6.7-liter Power Stroke V8 turbo diesel, churning out 440 horsepower and 860 lb-ft of torque. SAE's J2807 standard requires the truck to be loaded with about 400 pounds more weight than Ford’s internal test (two passengers instead of one, and base curb weight instead of minimum curb weight), but the weight addition had no effect on the 2015 Ford F-450 heavy-duty truck's towing capacity.
Last but not least, we'll mention that maximum payload goes from 5,450 pounds to 5,300 pounds using base curb weight, while the gross combined weight rating was hiked from 40,000 pounds to a truly staggering 40,400 lbs, which is 2,500 pounds better than the nearest 2015 Ford F-450 competitor.
