When BMW said it has plans for about a dozen cars based on the new UKL1 architecture, they were not pulling our leg. Already, we have a brand new MINI Cooper hatchback, soon to be followed by the 2 Series GT, MINI Convertible and a replacement for the Countryman.
But perhaps the most important UKL1-based car is the second generation X1, seen here undergoing road testing. Fresh details visible for the first time on this test prototype include the roof and A-pillars. The design of the new X1 is strong, with large grille and muscular arches. You can see the current generation right behind it and it appears the newer model is actually bigger.
In case you haven't been following development of this car, we'll tell you the big headline: it's going to be front-wheel drive!
The latest spy footage we acquired in Germany proves this beyond any doubt, as you can clearly see the front wheels are spinning. Being fun to drive has helped BMW turn the X1 into the best sold premium SUV in Europe, but in the end competition from cheaper and more spacious vehicles is forcing BMW to change the X1.
These crossover-like small SUVs are more like family minivans with cool body designs and practicality is much more important than offroadability.
