Volkswagen has just released official photos and initial information about the facelift for the Polo hatchback, concerning both the design and engine range.
Due for launch this summer, the 2014 Polo facelift comes about five years after the Type 6R generation made its debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2009. That's a long time, considering most facelifts come three years into a product's life cycle.

Exterior cosmetic changes are somewhat limited and are meant to make the Polo look a little bit more like the Golf 7, with a few sharp edges added to its otherwise rounded body. Both 3- and 5-door models have been revealed, offering new headlights, a redesigned lower front bumper and taillights.

Starting with the headlights, these appear to have a U-shaped design element, similar to the Golf 7, which has two of them per headlight. The lower grille is made to look wider and drops its center chrome strip in favor of a long flowing strip that connects the fog lights.

At the back, changes are much harder to notice, but Volkswagen say the bumper is new. While we do struggle to see that, changes to the taillights are a lot more obvious. They have a raised profile with square edges.

A new set of alloy wheels has been added to the Polo, 17-inch ones wrapped in 205/55 tires, probably only available on Polo Highline models. Hopefully, the smaller 15-inch alloys will also be changed. The press release makes no mention of this, but we think at least two new colors have been added. The red Polo facelift appears to be coated in Sunset Red Metallic while the blue one is Pacific Blue Metallic, both Golf 7 colors.

Will this be enough to make the Polo a class leader again, even in the face of strong competition from the current market leader, the Ford Fiesta. Stay tuned for the in-depth look at the engine range to find out.
