Ford has unveiled the one-of-a-kind 2014 Mustang US Air Force Thunderbirds Edition. Designed to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the US Air Force Thunderbirds, the unique musclecar will be auctioned for charity at the EEA AirVenture in Oshkosh, Wisconsin on August 1.
Painted to resemble the F-16 Falcon jet fighters used by the US Air Force Thunderbirds, which is known as the fastest flight demonstration team in the world, the unique Mustang wears a VIN 0001 identification number and features several Ford Racing components, including a supercharger, a suspension handling pack and Brembo brakes.
Inside, the Thunderbirds Edition gained bespoke navigation screen and instrument cluster, embroidered Thunderbirds elements, unique sill plates and puddle lamps “that project the aircraft silhouette when the doors open”. To further emphasize the aircraft-specific lightweight-theme, the rear seats have been removed.
All proceeds from the car donation and sale will benefit the EAA Young Eagles program, which has provided introductory flights to more than 1.6 million youngsters since 1992.
“The dedication and excellence displayed by the United States Air Force Thunderbirds are qualities we also celebrate at Ford,” said Edsel B. Ford II, a member of the Ford board of directors. “With this year’s beautiful U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds Edition Mustang, we’ve captured the recognizable symbols of their stature and paired it with the innovation our Ford design and engineering teams build into all of our products.
