We drove the 2014 E-Class Cabriolet on the same course we used for the 2014 S-Class and the first once showed less of the dizziness-inducing side oscillations. The steering also plays an important role here. We’re talking about Mercedes’ Direct-Steer system. This proves pretty playful for an electromechanical setup, offering enough feedback and good consistency.
And while you’re out there, enjoying the pretty sculpted steering wheel, you can have your family with you. Apart from its comfortable nature, the special safety features of the E-Class also make it very family friendly.
As an amusing fact, most of the top safety tech that “debuted” on the 2014 Mercedes S-Class had already entered the market quietly on the 2014 E-Class range. These systems rely on a stereo camera fitted at the center top of the windscreen. Other useful hardware comes in the form of short- and long-distance radars.
To name the most important, we’ll mention the Distronic Plus with Steering Assist. This active cruise control can also take care of the steering. Like we said in our S-Class test drive, the experience is nice, but you can fully rely on the system yet.
We’ll also mention the Braking Assistance with Cross-Traffic Assist. This scans junctions for oncoming vehicles. If necessary, it can fully apply the brakes if the drivers fails to react properly to its warnings. What’s more, there’s a pedestrian detection function added to the
BAS Plus and Pre-Safe Braking features.
The E-Class Cabriolet also comes with amazing passive safety features. How can you not want to transport your family in this when it’s got up to eleven airbags? It even comes with headbags that shoot upwards from the door linings. It can even auto-detect child seats and deactivate corresponding airbags.
Basically, besides a Head-Up Display and four-wheel steering, the E-Class Cabriolet has just about every tech piece you can think of. And while the latter won’t be coming to a Merc anytime soon, the HUD is already offered on the 2015 C-Class.
Returning to the E-Class Cabrio, the car also helps you keep your wife and children busy. The E-Class Cabriolet offers optional features such as the Splitview center display.
Thus, she can watch a movie while you follow navigation instructions. Then there’s also the Comand Online, which comes with features like a DVD drive and Internet access, as well as Linguatronic voice control. As for the audio quality, you can opt for a Harman Kardon Logic7 system. Not the newest tool in the shed though.
