Nissan isn't just busy taking the GT-R to new heights. The company has used the Tokyo Motor Show to reveal a pair of concepts that give us an idea of a possible future entry-level RWD sportscar.
Nissan explains that the concepts were penend with inputs from “digital natives”, the generation that came to the world after 1,990. However, the influences from the company’s past are more than obvious here.

The IDx Freeflow shows obvious resemblance to the first-gen Skyline GT-R. This is the softer proposal of the two, with Nissan seeing a possibility for 1.2 and 1.5-liter engines with CVT transmissions.

The IDx Nismo pays homage to the Datsun 510, a car that took two Trans Am Series class trophies back in 1971 and 1972. To start with, this is about 50 cm wider than the IDx Freeflow, making use of carbon fiber. That side exhaust you see on it could one day be linked to Nissan’s 1.6-liter DIG-T turbocharged engine, also working with a CVT.

The two may be simple concepts, but Nissan is waiting for the public reaction to see if a case for a production model can be made. The company has even come as far as bragging that this is by no means a response to the Toyota GT 86 / Subaru BRZ. They’ve even called the dou “mid life crisis” models. Retuning to the IDx Nismo and IDx Freeflow, feel free to express your opinion. Every detail matters, such as which of the two approaches you would prefer.
