X Tron is one of the latest to join the international club of innovative battery-electric passenger vessels. This new generation of emission-free boats aims to transform maritime transport of all kinds radically. While it may not be as famous as the Candela or other electric boats, the X Tron is ready to write history in Singapore and will surely gain notoriety worldwide.
We've talked about the UK's ambitious program for revolutionizing its maritime transport industry with an infusion of green technologies and supporting systems, and it's not the only one doing that.
The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) wants all new harbor vessels operating in Singapore waters to run on low-carbon energy. This should be done by the end of this decade, along with a target of 15% fewer emissions compared to 2021 levels. Of course, this is just the beginning. By 2050, MPA intends to have only emission-free vessels in operation. The only watercraft allowed to operate will either be battery-electric or run on sustainable fuels.
One of the first steps in this large-scale plan was to launch a competition for electric vessel designs and charging infrastructure limited to harbor boats. Pyxis was one of the shortlisted participants despite it being a very young company. It was founded at the beginning of 2022 by 34-year-old Tommy Phun.
Phun is no stranger to the maritime industry. His family operates a 30-year-old maritime service company, and he worked there for a decade before launching his own startup, Pyxis. The company seems to be headed for success, especially after this impressive accomplishment: the first Pyxis boat, X Tron, was officially selected for the MPA program.
The boat was officially unveiled during a public ceremony at the Clifford Pier, one of the most important historic locations in Singapore. Starting this month, the X Tron will show what it can do at the Marina South Pier during a pilot project in collaboration with SP Mobility. Both the harbor watercraft and the charging infrastructure are part of a pioneering electrification plan.
The feedback obtained from X Tron's operations will help create a nationwide network of electric harbor boats and charging infrastructure. It's only a first step towards bigger and more powerful passenger vessels that can run fully on electricity.
X Tron is the first model in the Pyxis One series, promising a range of up to 50 nautical miles (92.6 km). It's said to combine a minimalist, contemporary design with a powerful motor and advanced battery packs. It will operate with zero emissions and less noise and also be easier and cheaper to maintain compared to standard harbor vessels. It's only the beginning for this ambitious Singapore-based startup, and we look forward to seeing what the next models in the series have to offer.
