Usain Bolt is the fastest man in the world and Yamaha seem to want a piece of that action, so they have applied for a trademark for the ‘Bolt’ name. Now, while we have no clear indication that there is any relation to the actual athlete, the actual meaning of the word ‘bolt’ is not something you’d associate with something sporty.
However, there is no clear indication that they will actually use it as a name for one of their bikes, as the application says it would be used for “motorcycles and structural parts therefor”, the latter of which could pretty much mean anything. We cannot understand their motives, but we have no doubt that they do have them and that they will benefit in some way from this action.
It could be used for a cheap motorbike for the Indian market - the Yamaha Bolt - and it would make sense in that respect as it would probably be a bike which would be very easy to work on and the ‘Bolt’ name would make much more sense.
