Xcel Energy to Test Ford Transit Connect Electric

As the launch date for the long awaited fleet of Ford electric vehicles approaches, the American manufacturer, together with Azure Dynamics, the company in charge with converting some Ford models into electric vehicles, announced they have selected Xcel Energy to be among the first to test the Transit Connect Electric.

Two such vehicles will be added to the company's fleet, but will also receive $20,000 grants from its chairman’s Fund (a Fund set up by the Xcel Energy shareholders) to support the purchase of an extra 11 vans for its partners.

“We are excited to be part of this innovative initiative that will help encourage the market for electric vehicles and supports our company’s environmental leadership strategy,” said Dick Kelly, Xcel Energy CEO.

“The Ford Transit Connect Electric is a significant technological achievement in electric transportation, and we want our company and key partners to be among the first to experience this new technology and to help promote it within the communities we serve.”

The Ford Transit Connect Electric is equipped with lithium-ion battery sourced from Johnson Controls-Saft. It has a range of 80 miles on a single charge and, as all electric vehicles, can be recharged by either a 240-volt or standard 120-volt outlet.

“The Ford Transit Connect Electric is the first of five electrified vehicles we will launch over the next three years,”
said Nancy Gioia, director of global electrification. “Through our partnership with Azure Dynamics, the Ford Transit Connect Electric will allow businesses like Xcel Energy to operate more environmentally-friendly while reducing its need for gasoline.”
