Williams Tweaks F2 Car for 2010 Season

2010 will be the year of make-it-or-break-it for the one year old Formula 2 championship. Whereas 2009 was a type of trial run for the series, 2010 will bring several novelties, including an expanded calendar (18 races) and upgraded Williams Formula 2 cars.

Although the manufacturer said it is satisfied with how the Williams JPH1 F2 performed during this season, a new car next season (dubbed JPH1B) may add to the value and excitement of the series.

Williams is currently undergoing testing and simulations with the new car. Using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), the builder set a goal for itself of improving aerodynamic efficiency by 15 percent and generating 20 percent more downforce. The direct result of the new approach is meant to promote overtaking.

The engine of the car will see tweaks as well, with the 2010 version receiving a new high flow Garrett turbocharger and an extra 25 standard hp (future output rating – 425 hp). When in overboost, the turbocharger will allow power to be raised from 450 bhp to 480 bhp.

To handle the changes in aerodynamics and power, JPH1B will get increased tires, made of softer compound increase grip. Stability will be insured by a revised differential. The overall weight of the car will be decreased by around 25 kg (better distributed weight), to include new castings for the gearbox and bell housing adaptor in magnesium.

The series will take to the following locations in the upcoming season: Silverstone, Marrakech, TBC, Zolder, Algarve, Brands Hatch, Brno, Oschersleben, Valencia. Each of the locations will see tow races during a three-day long event.
