Mosley Hails Successful F2 Opener

FIA president Max Mosley seems to be all for “new blood” inside Formula One, as he's not only seeking new teams to make the F1 grid next year, but also young talented drivers. The 69-year old Englishman visited the newly-formed Formula 2 on their first outing at Valencia last weekend, and expressed his enthusiasm about the new series.

Initially designed as a potential feeder series for Formula One, the F2 provided some truly spectacular racing during the course of last weekend, with Canadian driver Robert Wickens clinching the season opener.

The cars running in the F2 are powered by Audi-prepared 1.8L turbocharged engines, with the chassis provided by Williams F1 Team. Both Mosley and Williams' Patrick Head joined the opening ceremony last weekend – the ties between the FIA and Frank Williams' outfit seem to strengthen more and more these days – and commonly agreed that F1 could feed itself from the series in the years to come.

I'm astonished at how successful the day has been, Jonathan Palmer (series owner) and Williams have done an absolutely fantastic job. The championship, the racing and the whole set-up is extraordinary and it has been a really great success,” said Mosley.

He also pointed out the reason why he thinks the new series are such a success, as he couldn't have helped noticing the financial easiness to compete in Formula 2. The fact that practically anyone can afford it is a great opportunity for any talented young driver to be able to make the roster.

I think the championship fits precisely with the cost-cutting measures that are being adopted in Formula 1. The barriers to entry have just been too big and too expensive in the past, and this championship is a means for people to get into F1 without spending a fortune. I wouldn't be at all surprised to see some drivers from this year's Formula 2 championship progress into Formula 1,” added the FIA president.
